Background: AT SEA OFF DUBAI, UNITED ARAB AMIRATES

The Norwegian oil tanker "Thorshavet", attacked in the Gulf earlier this month, arrived in the port of Dubai on December 26. The supertanker, laden with 230,000 tonnes (tons) of Iranian oil, was struck south of Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal on December 21. Another tanker, the Liberian-registered "Magnolia", was also hit on the same day. Earlier, Iraq said its warplanes had hit "two large naval targets" south of Kharg. Five days after the two attacks, a Spanish oil tanker was hit and damaged in the central Gulf on December 26. Shipping sources said the attack was assumed to have been Iranian retaliation for the two suspected Iraqi air-raids on the "Magnolia" and the "Thorshavet". Iraq has declared a war zone covering the northeast Gulf and warned of possible attacks on any ships seen in the area. Iran, which depends on oil exports to finance its war effort, has retaliated against Iraqi strikes by attacking vessels using Arab ports on the western side of the Gulf.
