SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY TOLD STUDENTS AT THE PURDUE UNIVERSITY IN LAFAYETTE, INDIANA, ON WEDNESDAY (1 MAY) THAT THE UNITED STATES MUST GET PEACE TALKS STARTED TO REACH AN HONOURABLE SETTLEMENT IN "THIS COSTLY AND AGONISING WAR" IN VIETNAM. THE SENATOR HAS STRESSED THE NEED FOR A SETTLEMENT OF THE VIETNAMESE WAR IN NEARLY ALL OF HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN SPEECHES BUT DOES NOT CALL FOR UNILATERAL WITHDRAWAL BY THE U.S.

SENATOR KENNEDY SAID THAT THE UNITED STATES NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT LOSING FACE BY AGREEING TO A SITE, WHICH THEY HAD NOT SUGGESTED, WHEN THEY WERE DEALING WITH A NATION LESS THAN ONE-TENTH THEIR SIZE, WITH THE MEREST FRACTION OF THEIR WEALTH, POWER AND PRESTIGE.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON TODAY (FRIDAY), AGREED TO A HANOI SUGGESTION THAT PARIS SHOULD BE USED AS A SITE FOR PRELIMINARY TALKS. THE TALKS ARE DUE TO BEGIN ON FRIDAY 10 MAY.

A LARGE CROWD OF STUDENTS PACKED INTO THE AUDITORIUM TO HEAR SENATOR KENNEDY ON WEDNESDAY.
