  • Description

The last debutante to be called by the Lord Chamberlain, the Earl of Soarbrough, was Canadian Miss Sandra Seagram, one of the famous whisky distilling family. She walked into the Presentation Hall at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, July 17th, curtsied before the Queen Mother and the Duke of Edinburgh and brought to a close an event that has for many years thrilled young society girls in Britain and the Commonwealth. After Thursday there will be no more debutante presentations at Court.

Miss Seagram was the last of 200 Commonwealth debs., attending a Garden Party at the Palace, to be presented. For many the lustre of the occasion was dulled by the absence of Her Majesty the Queen who is still indisposed. Nevertheless there were plenty of starry eyed young ladies, fashionably dressed, waiting their turn to curtsy.

Among the many guests for this final presentation were overseas bishops attending the Lambeth Conference and Sir Winston Churchill, with his wife. In our film he is seen making his way towards the refreshment tent on the lawn, the weight of his 83 years slowing his step.
