  • Description

As the Turkish Government was preparing its case on Cyprus for the Geneva Peace talks on Wednesday (24 July) the build-up of troops and military vehicles continued along the border with Greece.

Convoys of army trucks could be seen driving towards the 130-mile (210 kms) border and by the roadside tanks could be soon parked in fields ripe for harvest. Holidaymakers with their caravans heading away from the troubled border zone passed the convoys on the main roads.

Border posts have remained open to tourists in spite of the tension between the two countries. The town of Edirne -- which lies just west of the border -- was busy with military traffic. But local people were apparently going about their jobs quietly and apart from the influx of troops, the lives of the people in the area did not seem disrupted.

Sensitive areas along the border are included in the fourteen provinces where martial law was declared after the Cyprus crisis.
