  • Description

United States Air Force employees at the Misawa Air Base in the north of the main Japanese island of Honshu have been helping children to overcome blindness or near-blindness for the past ten years.

Under a programma called "Operation Eyesight", the Air Force personnel have been providing the children of nearby Japanese Schools for the Blind with special reading glasses, magnifying devices, braille typewriters and other aids.

But perhaps a more significant part of "Operation Eyesight" has been the financing of sight-restoring operations at the Iwate Medical Centre. Here, eye surgeons perform the difficult cornea transplant operation that often results in the patient's capacity to see for the first time.

"Operation Eyesight" has financed more than 70 of these operations, performed using corneas donated in Japan or from other countries in Asia.
