  • Description

With the United States presidential elections only a fortnight away, President Nixon on Monday(23 October) began a barnstorming campaign tour which was to take him through ten suburban New York towns in only seven hours. Police and Secret Service agents were barely able to restrain exhuberent crowds pressing against the presidential motorcade during its scheduled 50-mile trip. The President's appearance followed in the wake of criticism from his political opponents that he was hiding in the White House afraid to face the voters.

President Nixon, accompanied by Mrs Nixon, began his trip at Westchester, where most of this Visnews coverage was filmed, and held high hopes of taking the state in the elections. He had lost it in both 1960 and 1968, but had been encouraged by the reported defection to the Republican camp of thousands of Jewish Democrate concerned that their presidential candidate George McGovern might lessen support for Israel in his proposed sweeping defence cuts.
