  • Description

Flags were at half-mast in Dublin, Nov 22, as the bodies of an Irish United Nations patrol - ambushed by Baluba tribesmen in Katanga, Nov 8 - were borne in solemn funeral procession through the streets of the city, to be buried at Glasnevin Cemetery.

Comrades of the dead soldiers marched in the procession with Civil Defence detachments, a group of coloured students and a United Nations delegation. The coffin of Lieutenant Gleeson, leader of the patrol, was carried on a trailer towed by a jeep, while those of his men followed on trucks, bedecked with the Irish tricolour and the U.N. flag.

Approaching Glasnevin the route was lined by two ranks of infantry, resting on arms reversed. Then the firing party thundered their volleys over the graves, trumpeters sounded the Last Post, and the bodies were laid to rest.
