  • Description

THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT TODAY (FRIDAY) BEGAN RECRUITING MORE SPECIAL POLICE FOLLOWING PRESIDENT MAKARIOS'S ANNOUNCEMENT ON TUESDAY THAT THE FORCE WAS TO BE INCREASED TO 5,00 MEN. MORE POLICEWOMEN, TOO, ARE NOW BEING TAKEN IN TO THE REGULAR FORCE.

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS, ANNOUNCING PLANS TO STRENGTHEN THE POLICE FORCE, SAID THIS WAS NECESSARY "NOT ONLY FOR THE ISLAND'S SECURITY AND RETURN TO NORMALITY BUT ALSO IN ORDER TO FACE OTHER UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS." AT THE SAME TIME HE ORDERED ALL CYPRIOTS ILLEGALLY CARRYING WEAPONS TO HAND THEM IN TO THE GOVERNMENT.

THE INCREASE IN THE SPECIAL FORCE HAS LED TO STRONG PROTESTS BEING MADE BY LEADERS OF THE TURKISH COMMUNITY. DR. KUTCHUK, THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT VICE-PRESIDENT, PROTESTING TO THE UNITED NATIONS YESTERDAY, HAS CALLED THE PRESIDENT'S MOVE "AN ATTEMPT TO LEGALISE IN APPEARANCE MURDER, ARSON AND LOOTING AGAINST THE TURKISH COMMUNITY."
