  • Description

United Nations special envoy, General Robert Gruyer, had talks with Greek leaders in Athens on Wednesday (10 April) about the Cyprus problem, and relations between Greece and Turkey.

General Gruyer arrived from Ankara where he had talks with Turkish leaders. That afternoon, General Gruyer met the Greek Foreign Minister, Spyros Tetenes, and later, the Greek Premier Adamandios Androutsopoulos.

A major topic was the dispute between Greece and Turkey over oil rights in the Aegean Sea. The eastern Aegean continental shelf is believed to contain oil, and the dispute has been going on amid reports that Turkey and Greece have been secretly mobilizing against each other.

Another major topic was the deadlock in the negotiations over the future of Cyprus. The negotiations -- which broke down earlier this month -- were aimed at settling the dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

General Gruyer had earlier visited Cyprus to talk with the local leaders of the two factions.
