    Israeli security forces fired shots into the air and used water cannons to disperse Arab youths protesting against an unauthorised Israeli settlement attempt near Masudiya, Occupied West Bank, which would-be Jewish settlers agreed to abandon on Monday (8 December).

    For the second day running, students and demonstrators, mainly school children, burned tares and stoned Israeli cars, including Police and Army vehicles. Several children were detained.

    Few injuries were reported, but some security men were hit by stones being thrown by children, and one foreign journalist was injured.

    Meanwhile, the Orthodox Jewish squatters, who illegally occupied the biblical state of Sebastia, not far from Nablus a week ago, agreed to leave under a compromise with the Government which they hailed as a victory.

    The compromise was reached when Defence Minister, Shimon Peres, met a delegation of the estimated five hundred young squatters, who claim that the right to Jewish settlement in all parts of Palestine is enshrined in the Bible.

    Under the agreement, 30 families are to move to a nearby Israel Army camp where they will be given employment. the other will return peacefully to their homes throughout Israel.

    In return, the government has undertaken to consider, within the next three months, establishing Jewish settlements at specified sites in the occupied West Bank of Jordan, chosen for their security and defence advantages.

    SYNOPSIS: Agreement has been reached with the Orthodox Jewish squatters who moved into the Sebastia area of the occupied West Bank in Jordan. some of the Jews will move to a nearby Army camp and the others will return home.

    The squatters believe the right for Jews to settle in all parts of Palestine is enshrined in the Bible. Arab youths in nearby Nablus disagree and they rioted for two days to enforce their belief that the jews should leave.

    Israeli security forces were called out to quell the riots. The faced hundreds of you people, mainly students and school children who burned tares and stoned Israeli cars. The also attacked police and army vehicles.

    The troops had to fire shots into the air and to use water cannons to disperse the youths. Some soldiers were struck by various missiles hurled by the youths and one foreign journalist was injured. Several young people were arrested.

    But the Jewish squatters are now happy to leave Sebastia. They see the Government's promise to consider the establishment of some Jewish settlements along the West Bank as being a triumph.
