    THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC HAS CELEBRATED ITS EIGHTH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE. ABOUT 15-THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE IN TANANARIVE FOR THE CELEBRATIONS.

    THE MALAGASY REPUBLIC BECAME FULLY INDEPENDENT ON JUNE 26, 1960. TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY, PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA PARDONED 200 COMMON LAW PRISONERS, THEN ATTENDED THE CELEBRATION PARADE, WHICH INCLUDED A MARCH-PAST BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES, WHILE MILITARY AND CIVIL AIRCRAFT FLEW OVER THE CAPITAL.

    A GOODWILL MISSION FROM AUSTRALIA, LED BY THE FORMER MINISTER FOR THE NAVY, MR FREDERICK CHANEY, ALSO WATCHED THE CELEBRATIONS.
