  • Description

In Rome, October 9, a small group of people came to pay their last respects to Mario Lanza, the Italian-American singer and film star who died two days previously. The body was lying in a room at the Lanza family's apartment in Rome, where it had been brought during the night from the Rome clinic where he died. They waited patiently, some of them signing a visitor's book, before they were allowed to go into the house.

Mario Lanza was only 38. His real name was Alfred Arnold Cocozza, and as a boy he used to imitate the singing of Caruso. After the war, his fine tenor voice brought him rapid fame and one of his greatest screen successes was in title role of the film "The Great Caruso". His funeral is planned for today, October 10.
