  • Description

Australia's Rod Laver was forced to rally all his expertise on Wednesday(June 23) to turn back a strong challenge from South African, Ray Moore, in their second-round match at Wimbledon.

In a two-hour battle on the Centre Court, Laver strove to find counters to the power-packed attack from the long-haired Moore -- who now lives in London.

The red-haired Australian, who has captured the Wimbledon crown four times previously, dropped the first set to Moore 6-8. He won the next three sets, 6-3,6-2,7-5.

Laver is scheduled to meet American Clark Graebner in his next-round match. Graebner has one of the fastest serves in the game and has been a Wimbledon quarter-finalist for the past three years.

SYNOPSIS: Australia's Rod Laver serves to South African Ray Moore at the start of their second-round match at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

After a promising start, Laver was soon in trouble from the determined play of the long-haired South African.

Moore, who is now based in London, went on to take the first set from Laver 8-6.

But Laver, seeking to regain the Wimbledon Title he has won four times previously, fought back against the power-packed attack from Moore, to take the second set 6-3.

The Australian took the third set, 6-2. But in the fourth and the final set, the battle was on again.

Twice Moore got to within a point of forcing Laver to a fifth set, when he held two set-points at 5-3 in the fourth. Moore challenged all the way through the fourth set until a double-fault left him trailing 5-6. Laver then served a love-game to clinch his place among the last 32 qualifiers.
