  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 1,000 STUDENTS IN LONDON TODAY (MONDAY) ATTEMPTED TO MARCH TO THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS (LSE). THE STUDENTS, FROM UNIVERSITIES ALL OVER BRITAIN, FROM ABERDEEN TO SUSSEX, WERE DEMONSTRATING IN SYMPATHY WITH THE MILITANT WING OF STUDENTS FROM THE INSTITUTION. DISPUTES BETWEEN STUDENTS AND ADMINISTRATORS IN RECENT WEEKS HAVE RESULTED IN THE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF THE SCHOOL.

THE STUDENTS WENT FIRST TO THE OFFICES OF THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION. SOME OF THE MARCHERS CARRIED A BANNER READING "SHORT OUT", REFERRING TO THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, MR. EDWARD SHORT. LAST WEEK, MR. SHORT ISSUED A STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE VIOLENCE AT THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND URGED THAT ACTION BE TAKEN AGAINST THE MILITANT LEADERS.

THE MARCHERS THEN ATTEMPTED TO MOVE TO THE LSE ITSELF, BUT LINES OF POLICE UP TO FOUR DEEP KEPT THEM AWAY.

EVENTUALLY, THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED AWAY TO HOLD A RALLY ELSEWHERE IN LONDON.
