  • Description

A large number of Ugandans are seeking refugee in neighbouring Sudan. The country's news agency SUMA reported that many of the Ugandan refugees are living in the open and suffering shortages of essential supplies. And on Wednesday (30 May) the Ugandan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Otema Alimadi flew to Sudan for talks on the refugee problem.

SYNOPSIS: At Khartoum Airport Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Alimandi was met on his arrival by a Sudanese delegation which included his counterpart Dr. Frances Dang. Mr Alimandi carried a letter from Ugandan President Yusufu Lule to the Sudanese government which observers referred to the growing refugee problem.

Estimates about how many Ugandans have fled to Sudan vary between twenty-five and one-hundred thousand, but observers are certain that many more will follow. The Sudanese claim that most of the refugees are Moslems fleeing the new Ugandan government's forces and Tanzanian troops. It's been alleged that both are persecuting Moslems, who are traditional supporters of deposed Ugandan leader Idi Amin. The Ugandan government has strongly denied these charges, saying that many civilians have fled north to Sudan simply to escape the fighting.

The Sudanese Government and charity organisations are reported to be taking care of the refugees -- some of whom are Sudanese returning homeland.
