  • Description

The government crisis in Portugal continued to worsen yesterday (May 22), when Socialist Ministers boycotted an emergency government meeting to lead 50,000 supporters in a protest march through Lisbon.

Party leader Mario Soares headed the march, mounted to protest against the silencing of one of Portugal's few remaining non-Communist daily newspapers, the Republica. Marchers chanted against dictatorship.

Within hours of the march, Portugal's military leaders tried to saves the disintegrating government, calling on the feuding Communists and Socialists to reconcile their differences -- and promising that they would never allow the country to be ruled by a dictatorship.
