  • Description

A 40 nation working group from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) began three weeks of discussions in Mexico City on Tuesday (10 June) to draft a charter of economic rights and duties of states. The draft will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly for approval in September.

The working group will try to iron out differences still remaining despite three previous sessions in Geneva. The main points under discussion will be sovereignty over natural resources and the role of multi-national corporations.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Mr. Emilio Rabasa opened the conference. He told the delegates that obsolete economic schemes which made the rich richer and the poor poorer should be scrapped.

The Third World nations at the conference will press their case for price equality between their raw materials and the spiralling coasts of manufactured goods sold back to them by the industrialised nations.
