  • Description

In Cyprus, the physical toll of the war has been heavy. However, there have been other, less clearly-defined casualties. The education system for instance, has suffered tremendously since the Turkish invasion of 20 July.

Greek Cypriot authorities estimate that between 30 and 50 per cent of the island' schools - elementary, secondary, technical and special - are out of action. The causes are threefold - many schools are either in Turkish-occupied territory or close to it, some have been damaged beyond repair, and others have bene taken over as emergency centres. In the elementary system alone, 35 Geek Cypriot schools have been destroyed in the fighting.

In addition, with one third of the population homeless, the school population and teaching body have been widely dispersed. Many children and teachers are in refugee camps, and the authorities consider the crowded conditions far from suitable - both physically and psychologically for study of any kind.

On a practical level, school stationery and equipment were destroyed in the conflict. Some supplies were taken over by the Turkish occupation forces.
