Background: On Monday, November 20, the U.S. Air Force Air Defense Command demonstrated its global defense capability in a first-of-its-kind flight by F-106 "Delta Dart" fighter-intercepters. The delta-winged jets flew non-stop from Tacoma, Washington, to Panama City, Florida, on a simulated combat mission.

The trans-continental trip included one aerial refuelling and the firing of air-to-air missiles at jet drone targets over the Gulf of Mexico.

The mission was designed to duplicate a combat situation in which the Air Defense Command fighters might be required to deploy several thousand miles overseas then engage enemy aircraft prior to landing at a forward base.

This new global capability enables aircraft from the Command to deploy to overseas crisis areas when directed there on short notice.

With its ability to fly long-range refuelling missions while carrying a full complement of missiles, the F-106 is prepared at all times to engage enemy aircraft in battle, sometimes flying at more than twice the speed of sound.
