  • Description

DEPOSITORS CROWDED OUTSIDE THE LEBANON'S HEAVILY GUARDED BANKS IN BEIRUT WHEN THEY OPENED TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER A THREE DAY CLOSURE ORDERED BY THE GOVERNMENT, FOLLOWING A HEAVY RUN ON THE INTRA BANK, ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MAJOR BANKS. THE INTRA BANK ITSELF REMAINED CLOSED, IN SPITE OF THE CROWD OF PEOPLE WAITING OUTSIDE.

AT SOME BANKS, CASHIERS SHOWED PILES OF LARGE DENOMINATION BANKNOTES AS A GESTURE TO RESTORE CONFIDENCE, WHILE MANAGERS PERSONALLY DIRECTED BUSINESS, KEEPING A CLOSE WATCH ON WITHDRAWALS. THE BANK DID NOT CLOSE UNTIL MIDDAY, THE USUAL TIME, AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BANKERS' ASSOCIATION, MR. PIERRE EDDE, SAID THE SITUATION WAS BY THEN NORMAL.

THE LEBANESE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT THAT IT WAS TAKING MEASURES TO PROTECT DEPOSITORS.
