  • Description

A flotilla of 58 sailing ships sets sail from the old Dutch port of Leiden on Saturday to commemorate the start of the Pilgrim Fathers voyage to America in 1620.

The flotilla followed the course taken by the Pilgrim Fathers, exiled from Britain because of their Nonconformist religious beliefs. They sailed over the river Vliet from Leiden to Rotterdam before making their way to England where they shipped aboard the Mayflower on their historic journey.

They had been in exile from Britain for 20 years when they followed their leader, the Reverend John Robinson, to America. To commemorate the historic sailing the Dutch have put up a plaque at Delfshaven, Rotterdam, the starting point of the journey.

The boats, which passed through the old town of Delft, were crewed by men and women wearing the period costume of the Pilgrim Fathers.
