  • Description

THE TSR 2, BRITAIN'S NEW SUPERSONIC STRIKE AIRCRAFT, TODAY (SUNDAY) TOOK THE AIR FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM A SECRET AIRFIELD NEAR SALISBURY, UK. AFTER MORNING TAXIING TESTS THE SLEEK PROTOTYPE THUNDERED TO A PERFECT TAKE-OFF AND STAYED IN THE AIR FOR 14 MINUTES BEFORE COMING IN TO AN EASY LANDING.

WITH FLAMES STREAKING FROM THE TAIL PIPES OF ITS TWO HUGE ENGINES THE TSR 2 WAS "SHADOWED" BY TWO AIRCRAFT FROM WHICH VISUAL AND PHOTOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE.

AFTER THE MAIDEN FLIGHT MR AMERY, THE AVIATION MINISTER, PAID TRIBUTE TO THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY FOR DEVELOPING THE PLANE IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS. THE TEST PILOT SAID: "EVERYTHING WENT VERY WELL. I FEEL VERY ENCOURAGED ABOUT THIS AEROPLANE. IT IS A GOOD AEROPLANE."
THE TSR 2 IS A COMPLETE WEAPONS-DELIVERY SYSTEM DESIGNED TO REACH ITS TARGET UNDETECTED BY AN 800-MILES-AN-HOUR (1290 KPH) THREE-TOP LEVEL APPROACH BENEATH ENEMY RADAR COVER. IN THE THINNER AIR OF HIGHER ALTITUDES THE PLANE IS CAPABLE OF TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND. ITS EFFECTIVE RANGE IS BETWEEN 1000 AND 1800 MILES (1600 AND 2900 KMS) DEPENDING ON ALTITUDE.

TSR 2'S HIGH SPEED LOW LEVEL APPROACH IS MADE POSSIBLE BY FORWARD LOOKING RADAR WHICH CAN DETECT OBSTACLES AS SMALL AS ELECTRICITY PYLON LINES. IN A COMPARTMENT BEHIND THE COCKPIT ARE HOUSED A COMPUTER, ABLE TO AUTOMATICALLY FLY THE PLANE, AND A SERIES OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES TO COUNTER MISSILE ATTACKS.

THE TACTICAL STRIKE PLANE'S NAVIGATION AND ATTACK SYSTEM IS SAID TO BE THE MOST ADVANCED IN THE WORLD. AND THE PLANE IS CAPABLE OF DELIVERING NUCLEAR AND CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS WITH WHAT IS OFFICIALLY DESCRIBED AS "UNPRECEDENTED ACCURACY".

THE COST OF DEVELOPING THE TSR 2, INCLUDING A CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS SYSTEM, HAS BEEN GBP250 MILLION. EACH PLANE READY FOR COMBAT WILL COST TWO MILLION STERLING.

AN INITIAL ORDER FOR FIFTY, INCLUDING A DEVELOPMENT BATCH OF 9, HAS BEEN PLACED WITH THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION BY THE ROYAL AIR FORCE. THE FIRST PRODUCTION BATCH WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SQUADRON SERVICE IN LATE 1967 OR EARLY 1968.
