  • Description

Historically, the American GI has been an ambassador of good will wherever he has gone. This is especially true today in Southeast Asia, where military medical personnel have been extending themselves, on their own time, to treat those in need. Both in South Vietnam and in Thailand, where these pictures were taken, medical Civil Action Teams, constituted for the principal purpose of improving the health status of the natives, work long, hard hours under trying circumstances. But the need is so great that many of these men spend their time off continuing to spread comfort and solace with their skill and medicine. These men, stationed at the Takh Li and Don Muang Royal Thai Air Force Bases, travel frequently to the surrounding countryside as they treat the sick. Sometimes they work with Thai military, such as Air Marshall Tragool Thavaravej, Royal Thai Surgeon General. The needs they serve are varied. In addition to treating the seriously ill, the medicine they dispense may include simply aspirin or vitamins. And when they take along a veterinarian, the preventive medicine for a village is complete with the inclusion of rabies shots for the children's pets.
