  • Description

A RANGE OF SOPHISTICATED SOVIET WEAPONRY CAPTURED IN THE SINAI CAMPAIGN WAS SHOWN TO MEMBERS OF THE PRESS IN TEL AVIV YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE EQUIPMENT ON DISPLAY INCLUDED A GROUND-TO-AIR MISSILE, ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN, AN ANTI-TANK RICKET UNIT AND A DECONTAMINATION UNIT.

THE MISSILE - THE RADAR-CONTROLLED SA-2 - WAS ONE OF A BATTERY SET UP NEAR THE MITLA PASS.

THE ANTI-TANK ROCKET UNIT, WITH FOUR FITTED MISSILES, IS CONSIDERED BY THE ISRAELIS TO BE SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING PRODUCED IN WESTERN NATIONS. SOME OF THE CAPTURED EQUIPMENT IS IN FACT ENTIRELY NEW TO WESTERN OBSERVERS, AND SEVERAL FOREIGN MILITARY ATTACHES HAVE ASKED TO SEE IT.

YESTERDAY, ISRAELI INTELLIGENCE ALSO POINTED OUT A RAPID-FIRE CANON, A RADAR UNIT FOR CORRECTING THE RANGE OF ARTILLERY FIRE ON MOVING TARGETS, A COMMUNICATIONS VEHICLE CONTAINING ELABORATE RADIO EQUIPMENT AND AN ANTI-TANK RECOILLESS RIFLE.

THE "MOST IMPORTANT" CAPTURE WAS A HOWITZER WITH A 10-MILE RANGE, WHICH THE INTELLIGENCE OFFICER SAID WAS ONE OF THE NEAREST SOVIET GUNS. IT FIRES FIVE TO SEVEN ROUNDS A MINUTE, AND IS SAID TO BE ABLE TO OUTSHOOT ANYTHING MADE BY WESTERN ARMOURIES.

THE DECONTAMINATION CHAMBER, ACCORDING TO THE SPOKESMAN, SUGGESTED THAT THE EGYPTIANS FEARED AND HAD TAKEN PRECAUTIONS AGAINST GAS ATTACKS.
