    THIS VISIT IS THE FIRST BY A MEMBER OF THE DUTCH ROYAL FAMILY TO INDONESIA THIS CENTURY AND IT SEALS THE RECONCILIATION BETWEEN THE ASIAN ISLAND REPUBLIC AND ITS FORMER COLONIAL MASTERS.

    FOUR YEARS OF CONFLICT BETWEEN INDONESIA AND HOLLAND FOLLOWED THE INDONESIAN DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN 1945.

    NEW TENSIONS AROSE BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES IN 1957 WHEN FORMER PRESIDENT SUKARNO NATIONALISED ALL THE EXTENSIVE DUTCH BUSINESS INTERESTS IN INDONESIA. THEN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WERE BROKEN OFF UNTIL HOLLAND IN 1962 HANDED OVER THE TERRITORY OF DUTCH NEW GUINEA, NOW WEST IRIAN, TO INDONESIA.

    NOW HOLLAND IS ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE WESTERN CREDITOR COUNTRIES WHICH HAVE HELPED TO STABILISED THE INDONESIAN ECONOMY AFTER ITS ALMOST COMPLETE COLLAPSE UNDER THE SUKARNO REGIME. NO LESS THAN 17 PER CENT OF TOTAL DUTCH FOREIGN AID GOES TO INDONESIA.

    SYNOPSIS: LARGE CROWDS ASSEMBLED AT DJAKARTA AIRPORT THIS WEEK (MARCH 12) TO WELCOME PRINCE BERNHARD OF THE NETHERLANDS.

    DR. ADAM MALIK, THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, WELCOMED PRINCE BERNHARD IN THE NAME OF THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT. THIS VISIT IS THE FIRST BY A MEMBER OF THE DUTCH ROYAL FAMILY THIS CENTURY AND SEALS THE RECONCILIATION BETWEEN THE ASIAN ISLAND REPUBLIC AND ITS FORMER DUTCH COLONIAL MASTERS. PRINCE BERNHARD WILL REMAIN INDONESIA FOR TWO WEEKS AND WILL VISIT MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. HIS VISIT IS DESCRIBED AS A GOODWILL TOUR.

    AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, PRINCE BERNHARD WAS GREETED BY THE HEAD OF STATE, PRESIDENT SUHARTO.

    THE TWO DIGNITARIES EXCHANGED GIFTS. AMONG THE SUBJECTS TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE TWO STATESMEN WILL BE CONTINUED DUTCH CO-OPERATION WITH INDONESIA. HOLLAND GIVES SPECIAL ATTENTION TO INDONESIA IN ITS ECONOMIC RECONSTRUCTION AND ALLOTS 17 PER CENT OF ITS FOREIGN AID TO THIS COUNTRY.
