HUNDREDS OF NACIONALISTA PARTY SUPPORTERS AND THEIR CANDIDATES FOR THE PARTY NOMINATION FOR NEXT YEAR'S NOVEMBER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS GATHERED OUTSIDE MANILA HOTEL LAST SUNDAY WHEN THE PARTY HELD ITS CONVENTION.

THE FIVE CANDIDATES WHO SUBMITTED THEIR NAMES TO THE CONVENTION FOR NOMINATION WERE: SENATOR ARTURO TOLENTINO; SENATE PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS; VICE PRESIDENT EMMANUEL PELAEZ; SENATOR GIL PUYAT AND SENATE PROTEM FERNANDO LOPEZ.

MOST OBSERVERS BELIEVED THE NOMINATION WOULD GO TO EITHER SENATOR MARCOS OR MR. PELAEZ.

THE CONVENTION OPENED WITH THE NOMINATIONS, VOTING AND THE CANVASSING OF VOTES. THE CONVENTION WAS ORDERLY. THERE WERE NO CAMPAIGN BUNTINGS NOR CHEERING SQUADS INSIDE THE HALL. PORTRAITS OF THE FIVE ASPIRANTS WERE THE ONLY POSTERS EVIDENT.

THE CONVENTION WHICH ENDED AT MIDNIGHT, RESULTED IN THE NOMINATION OF MR. MARCOS WHO IS 47. HE PLEDGED TO FREE THE COUNTRY FROM A "TYRANNY SYMBOLISED BY PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL".

SENATOR MARCOS WAS FORMERLY A SUPPORTER OF PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL BUT RESIGNED THE PRESIDENT'S LIBERAL PARTY EARLIER THIS YEAR TO JOIN THE OPPOSITION.

NEXT YEAR'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION NOW PROMISES TO BE ONE OF THE MOST KEENLY FOUGHT IN THE HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINES.
