  • Description

Signs of mounting general unrest against President Juan Peron are beginning to become evident throughout Argentina and particularly in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Although guerrilla activity has been a common feature of political life for many years the unrest has now begun spreading to city workers who formerly were among Peron's strongest supporters.

Indicative of the unrest was the closing of El Mundo, the leftwing Buenos Aires newspaper, by police on Thursday (14 March).

The closure came after El Mundo, along with a number of other newspapers, published advertisements as part of conditions imposed by guerrillas for the release of an American Executive.

It was the only newspaper opposed to President Peron's return to power last year and had been subjected to a number of police raids and numerous shooting incidents.

Only twenty-four hours before thousands of workers from a major meat packing plant demonstrated outside the Presidential Palace against mounting unemployment and poor working conditions.

It was the first time since President Peron's election to power last year that workers have demonstrated in front of the Palace.
