  • Description

Madame Consuelo Gonzalez De Velasco, wife of the President of the Republic of Peru, and a Peruvian government delegation led by Minister of Fisheries, General Javier Tantalean Vanini, and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rear-Admiral Alberto Jimenez De Lucio, on April 16th met Premier Chou En-lai in Peking.

Also Present on the Chinese side were Comrade Chiang Ching, Vice-Premier Li Hsien-nien, and Kuo Mo-jo, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

The Peruvian party had arrived in China two days before on April 14th. The fact that the Peruvian delegation is led by the Minister of Fisheries is indicative of the Peruvian government's hopes of increased Chinese support in its attempts to extend Peruvian territorial waters to two hundred miles from the coast in the face of opposition from the United States. During a banquet given in Shanghai for the Peruvian guests on Thursday (April 20th), Industry Minister Jimenez thanked China for the support it had given Peru on this question.

SYNOPSIS: In Peking last week, the Peruvian President's wife, Madame Consuelo Gonzalez De Velasco, met Premier of the People's Republic of China, Chou En-lai. She was accompanied by a delegation from the Peruvian government, headed by the Minister of Fisheries, General Tantalean Vanini, and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Admiral Jimenez De Lucio.

Madame Velasco and the government delegation had arrived in China two days before on April 14th, at the beginning of a goodwill tour that was to take them through much of southern China. Apart from the general promotion of relations between the two countries, the Peruvian government specifically hoped to gain increased support from China in their struggle to extend Peru's territorial waters to two hundred miles. At present the United States is offering strong opposition to Peru's plans.

Madame Velasco's son, Juan Velasco Gonzalez, is also among the peruvian delegation as Adviser to the Fisheries Ministry, as well as Minister of Fisheries General Vanini -- an indication of the importance that Peru attaches to the proposed extension of its territorial waters. Industry Minister Jimenez later thanked China for the support it had given them during their confrontation with the United States.
