Background: There are fears of civil war in the Malagasy Republic. The Socialist Party has given a warning of the danger of civil strife, at a time when secret consultations are being held to form a government to replace the one dissolved last weekend after an apparent attempted coup d'etat.
Head of State General Gabriel Ramanantsoa announced the dissolution of the government last Saturday (25 January), as first reports of the New year Tananarive. The rebels were led by General Ramanantsoa's former military adviser, Colonel Brechard Rajaonarison.
There has been no news on the fate of the rebels, who had barricaded themselves in at the police base, and there were indications that general Ramanantsoa was trying to negotiate a settlement, rather than risk a confrontation which could spark violence throughout the island.
