Background: World leaders conferred with President Pompidou at the Elysee Palace in Paris (Thursday) following the memorial service for General De Gaulle.

President Nixon, who represented the United States at the ceremony at Notre Dame cathedral, was at the Palace to present his condolences to the French Head of State. President Saragat of Italy was another world statesman to meet with President Pompidou.

The Soviet President, Nikolai Podgorny also visited the Elysee Palace. At a reception later he talked with President Nixon for 20-minutes. They were reported to have had a relaxed and non-political conversation -- but their meeting after recent strained American-Soviet relations was an indication of the late President De Gaulle's world standing.

The talks with President Pompidou, followed the memorial services for General De Gaulle held throughout France as bells in the nation's 50,000 churches rang out a peal of honour to the late leader.
