  • Description

THE MAIN POLITICAL COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED NATIONS HAS PASSED A DRAFT RESOLUTION CALLING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE IN LATIN AMERICA.

THE VOTE WAS TAKEN AFTER THE SOVIET UNION, AND NINE OTHER NATIONS HAD ENDORSED CUBA'S DEMAND THAT AMERICA ABANDON THE NAVAL BASE AT GUANTAKO, AS A CONDITION FOR THE SETTING UP OF THE SOUTH AMERICAN NUCLEAR FREE ZONE.

THE RESOLUTION, CARRIED BY 89 VOTES TO NIL AND WITH 14-ABSTENTIONS, CLEARED THE MAIN POLITICAL COMMITTEE WITH SUFFICIENT VOTES TO ENSURE THE NECESSARY TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

THE RESOLUTION CALLED UPON THE ASSEMBLY TO APPROVE STUDIES BY LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES ON HOW THEY CAN ACHIEVE AGREEMENT ON OUTLAWING NUCLEAR WEAPONS ON THEIR TERRITORIES.
