Background: Latest pictures of the surface of Mars, transmitted by the Mariner-9 spacecraft, have given scientists a vivid glimpse of geological features on the Red Planet. The spacecraft has now been in orbit for a couple of months. But its first pictures were obscured by dust-storms raging on the planet.

This National Broadcasting Company coverage, starting with animation of Mariner-9 in orbit, includes several of the pictures became back last week. They show large-scale basins and cracks in the surface of the planet.
