  • Description

New Zealand's John Walker on Tuesday (12 August) broke the three minute fifty barrier for the mile by 0.6 of a second.

The time, set during an international athletics meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, Sliced 1.6 seconds from the previous world record set by Filibert Bayi, of Tanzania in Kingston, Jamaica, in May this year.

Walker has earlier told journalists he thought 3:50 would not be broken this century.

Pacemaker for the race was Sweden's Goaran Zenermark who led the field for the first two laps in a torrid 1.65.5
Walker came from second to take the lead at the start of the third lap and began to move away from Australian Ken Hall, who has moved into second, when the bell went for the final lap in 2:53.5.

Hall Finished second with a time of 3:55.2.

Walker's record comes 21 years after Sir Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier with a 3:59.4 run.

With the mile being run less nowadays the New Zealander's record is likely to stand for some time.

Walker said after the race he would not be attempting any more fast mile times this season, but the 1500 metres was "another matter".

In Oslo a fortnight before his record mile run, Walker ran a 1500 metre only two-tenths of a second outside the 3:32.2 record, held by Bayi.

SYNOPSIS: The world record for the mile was broken again on Tuesday this time in Sweden by New Zealander, John Walker, with a time of three minutes forty nine point four seconds -- one point six seconds under the previous record held by Tanzania's Filibert Bayi.

Walker took the lead at the end of the second lap.

Winner John Walker tucked into second place behind early pacemaker, Goaran Zenermark, of Sweden. He took the lead before the start of the third lap and held it until the finish. He ran his first lap in fifty-six point three seconds, and still looked fresh after finishing the second lap in one minute fifty four point two.

Cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of about ten thousand, Walker started to move away from the field when the bell for the last lap rang at two minutes fifty three and a half seconds. Ken Hall of Australia ran strongly to try to catch Walker, but the fast finishing New Zealander moved further in front.

His record is a milestone for the event as he is the first to break the three minute fifty barrier
