    The announcement of the death of the Chinese leader, Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, took up most of the space in Japanese newspapers.

    At the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo flags were lowered to half mast and large portraits of Chairman Mao were decked with black ribbon.

    Shortly after the announcement, the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Takoo Miki, visited the Chinese Embassy. He told Chinese officials that he was deeply shocked and grieved to learn of the death of "the great leader of the Chinese people."
    The Prime Minister added that he would continue to work for improved Sino-Japanese relations.
