  • Description

Nepal's popular King Mahendra and Queen Ratnarajya flew October 6 from Kathmandu for their 3-week state and official visit to Britain. At the crowded airport, great bouquets of multi-coloured flowers and garlands of marigolds were part of an affectionate send-off to the royal couple. Cabinet ministers, diplomatists and other public figures gathered to bid farewell to the King - the first Nepalese monarch to visit the United Kingdom.

Earlier, the King and Queen had a tent set up in the lawns of the royal palace to receive the homage of their Ministers, officials and subjects before their departure.

The royal couple will stop at Bombay, India, for three days before flying to their Ilyushin aircraft to Paris, France, October 9 for a 7-day private visit. They will arrive in Britain October 17 with their daughter Princess Shanti, Deputy Premier, General Subarna Shamsher, and the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Thapa. Their son, Crown Prince Birendra, who is at Eton School in England, will join them in London.

Relations between Britain and Nepal have continued harmoniously for more than a hundred years. It is expected that King Mahendra will invite Queen Elizabeth to visit Nepal when she goes to India early next year.
