Background: ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS, MARCH 31 OFFICIALLY OPENED AN "EOKA" MUSEUM IN NICOSIA TO COMMEMORATE THE "HEROIC FIGHTERS OF THE CYPRUS STRUGGLE". "EOKA" WAS THE TERRORIST ORGANISATION WHICH CAMPAIGNED - UNSUCCESSFULLY - TO LINK THE BRITISH ISLAND WITH GREECE.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 1,000 EXHIBITS, INCLUDING A VARIETY OF HOME-MADE BOMBS. MOST PROMINENT ITEM, HOWEVER, IS THE GALLOWS ON WHICH NINE MEN OF "EOKA" WERE EXECUTED BY THE BRITISH DURING THE ISLAND'S FOUR-YEAR EMERGENCY. THE ROPE WAS THAT USED FOR THE ACTUAL HANGINGS.

OTHER EXHIBITS RANGE FROM A BOMB-MAKING INSTRUMENT TO ARTICLES USED BY THE "EOKA" TERRORISTS DURING THE STRUGGLE. THE EXHIBITION WAS OPENED THE DAY BEFORE THE SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST BOMB ATTACKS IN CYPRUS BY"EOKA". POLICE LEAVE WAS CANCELLED AND STRONG FORCES WERE ON DUTY, APRIL 1, AS GREEK CYPRIOTS CELEBRATED THE ANNIVERSARY.
