The first phase of the Alaska pipeline project is well under way in Alaska. Seven?
The first phase of the Alaska pipeline project is well under way in Alaska. Seven work camps have been established and four more will be built as soon as enough supplies can be trucked into the tundra.
Throughout the winter convoys of trucks have kept the camps supplied. To make their way through the snow a highway had to be constructed. It was built on top of the thick snow and now a race against time is underway to get more supplies through before the tundra becomes soft and spongy under the spring and summer sun. An estimated nine thousand construction workers will be employed before the end of the first pipeline construction ends in November. After many years of discussion and frustrations, at last the Alaskans can see tangible proof that the oil pipeline is underway.
