  • Description

THE PROLONGED SEASONAL DRY SPELL IN THE BRITISH COLONY OF HONG KONG HAS DRIVEN FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND RESIDENT BUDDHISTS TO PRAY FOR RAIN FOR SEVEN DAYS.

ALL FIVE HUNDRED BUDDHIST TEMPLES IN THE DENSELY POPULATED COLONY ARE JAMMED DAILY WITH DEVOTEES - MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN - SOME OF WHOM STAYED OVERNIGHT IN THE TEMPLES.

THE PROLONGED DROUGHT HAS CAUSED HONG KONG'S RESERVOIRS TO FALL AND FARMERS IN RURAL AREAS SAY THAT THEIR VEGETATION IS DYING AS THE RESULT OF THE DRY SPELL.

BUDDHIST ABBOTS HAVE ASKED THE DEVOTEES TO ABSTAIN FROM EATING MEAT AND THE SLAUGHTERING OF ANIMALS AND TO SET FREE LIVE CREATURES IN PREPARATION FOR THE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF KWAN YIN, THE GODDESS OF MERCY, IN TWO WEEKS' TIME.

AFTER A SPECIAL CEREMONY IN ONE TEMPLE ON FRIDAY (MARCH 16) MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED DEVOTEES SET FREE HUNDREDS OF BIRDS, MONKEYS, DEER, TURTLES AND FISH ON A NEARBY MOUNTAIN SLOPE.

BUDDHISTS IN THE COLONY BELIEVED THAT THE PROLONGED SPELL WAS CAUSED BY "MAN'S SINS" AND THAT LORD BUDDHA IS SHOWING HIS DISPLEASURE AT THE "KILLING ON EARTH".ONLY ACTS OF BENEVOLENCE WOULD APPEASE HIM AND BRING THE MUCH NEEDED RAIN.
