NOW A BIG TRAINING SCHOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS HAS BEEN OPENED AT SAGA HEIGHTS ON THE IZU PENINSULA.

    DURING THEIR EIGHT MONTHS TRAINING, THE ASPIRING CYCLE STARS -- MOST OF WHOM ARE AGED BETWEEN 15 AND 23 -- UNDERGO A SPARTAN COURSE. THEN THEY HAVE TO PASS EXAMINATIONS WHICH WILL QUALIFY THEM AS PROFESSIONALS. DEPENDING ON THEIR PERFORMANCE, THEY ARE DIVIDED INTO CLASSES AND CAN THEN COMPETE PROFESSIONALLY WITHIN THAT CATEGORY.

    THERE ARE CURRENTLY NEARLY 4,000 PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS IN JAPAN AND THE POPULARITY OF THE SPORT HAS OVERTAKEN MOTOR RACING AND HORSE RACING.
