Background: A French delegation -- led by the Minister for Foreign Co-operation, M. Pierre Abelin -- visited Niger on Thursday (13 March) for the 12th meeting of the Franco-Nigerian Commission.
The Commission was set up to handle economic and cultural co-operation between the two states.
At the end of Thursday's meeting, Niger's Foreign Minister, Mr. Adamou Moumouni Djermakove, commented that relations between the two countries had "entered a new phase."
There is now more active co-operation between France and African countries, he said. But he still hoped that soon the present consultatory assistance would be extended to cover French capital investment in Africa.
During his visit, M. Abelin visited several cultural establishments in Niamey, which are subsidised by French funds.
