  • Description

On Monday (16 June) the Government of Bangladesh closed all but four of the country's 20 daily newspapers in what was officially described as "the greater interest of the country".

The four newspapers which survived closure ... are now nationalised by the Government under a separate ordinance.

In addition, another 200 periodicals critical of the present regime were also closed down. Another 100-odd periodicals supporting the government are allowed to continue publishing.

The action has put more than 600 journalists in the country out of work. Many of them had voluntarily joined the country's only political party last month.

A government committee has been set up to look into their job problem.
