  • Description

The British Prime Minister, Edward Heath said that the ultimate aim of the European Economic Community was to build a Europe which is not only prosperous, but a Europe which is free, democratic, safe and happy.

Mr. Heath was speaking at a dinner at Hampton Palace near London on Tuesday (2 January) night, to celebrate Britain's entry into the Common Market.

Mr. Heath said such a goal extends beyond the confines of the existing nine nation community.

He said: 'It concerns our neighbours to the east, the Soviet Union and her allies, and the neutral nations, as well as our own member states and associates.

Mr. Heath said the whole relationship between Eastern and Western Europe was now, once again, in a state of flux. He said that in 1973 there would be further important decisions to be taken.

The British leader welcomed the progress made by West Germany in working out a better relationship with its neighbours.

Mr. Heath also pleaded for the nations of the community to do more to help the less developed countries in their struggle to create conditions of life compatible with human dignity and self-respect.

This film includes part of Mr. Heath's speech.
