  • Description

SOVIET SOLDIERS TODAY (SATURDAY) PARADED AT THE RUSSIAN WAR MEMORIAL IN THE BRITISH SECTOR OF WEST BERLIN. THE CEREMONY MARKED THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION. THE PARADE WAS BEFORE GENERAL IVAN YAKUBOVSKI, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE SOVIET FORCES IN EAST GERMANY.

BRITISH SOLDIERS HAD OPENED THE GAP IN THE BARBED WIRE SURROUNDING THE MEMORIAL, NEAR THE BRANDENBURG GATE, BEFORE THE CEREMONY BEGAN.

THE PARADING SOLDIERS WERE FOLLOWED BY A DIPLOMATIC DELEGATION FROM EAST BERLIN, HEADED BY MR. PYOTR ABRASSIMOV, SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO EAST GERMANY.

AFTER THE TROOPS RETURNED TO EAST BERLIN, BRITISH SOLDIERS AGAIN CLOSED THE GAP IN THE BARBED WIRE, WHICH WAS ERECTED SHORTLY AFTER THE EAST GERMAN BORDER CLOSURE 1961 TO PROTECT THE RUSSIANS ON GUARD THERE FROM POSSIBLE DEMONSTRATIONS BY WEST BERLINERS.
