  • Description

Telephone communications workers held a stormy demonstration in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (6 August) to protest at their low wages, broken promises over rises owing to them and the rising cost of living.

They marched through the streets, chanting, then gathered in the Congress plaza in front of the National Congress Building.

They abused government ministers for not approving their pay rise, and called on the President, Mrs. Maria Estela Peron to compare their wages with those in the ministries and in the Army.

Meanwhile Labour leaders in the country urged the government to declare a 90-day state of economic emergency to protect workers jobs
Under the proposed emergency, employers would not be able to lay off workers or reduce working hours.

At the same time a price freeze would be imposed and government subsidies provided for basic consumer items.

About 250,000 workers have lost their jobs in the past two weeks in the Buenos Aires industrial belt alone and some economists predict national unemployment of one million by the end of the month.
