    THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON COLONIALISM OPENED THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF MEETINGS IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ATTENDED BY DELEGATES FROM THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, THE SOVIET UNION, THE U.S.A. AS WELL AS MANY OTHER NATIONS.

    AT YESTERDAY'S MEETING, A FORMER ADEN CHIEF MINISTER, MR ABDEL KAWEE MACKAWEE, WHO WAS DISMISSED FROM HIS POST LAST DECEMBER, URGED THE COMMITTEE TO DEMAND THAT BRITAIN END THE EXISTING STATE OF EMERGENCY IN ADEN.

    HE ALSO DEMANDED THAT THE UNITED NATIONS SHOULD SEND A MISSION TO THE TERRITORY TO PREPARE FOR ELECTIONS, AFTER WHICH BRITAIN SHOULD HOLD TALKS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NEWLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT.

    MR MAHMOUD RIAD, THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, TOLD THE COMMITTEE THAT THE ADEN SITUATION REQUIRED POSITIVE MEASURES TO ENSURE THAT THE U.N. RESOLUTIONS WERE IMPLEMENTED.
