SYNOPSIS: More than 100 firemen fought the outbreak and parts of the ruined shell were still smouldering at dawn on Tuesday. The flames spread quickly and fire authorities say it was not possible to prevent damage to neighbouring buildings.

Damage to the seven-storey building, which also housed the Information Ministry and the Ministry of Science and Technology, was estimated at several million dollars. Two office cleaners were seriously hurt after jumping from an upper floor to escape the flames.Four other people were rescued by firemen and suffered only minor injuries.Government officials touring the site on Tuesday said the Foreign Ministry, which was due to move to a new site soon, lost many irreplacable documents and records.
