  • Description

The murdered Kenyan politician Joshia Mwangi Kariuki was buried at his farm at Gilgil, Kenya, on Sunday (16 March) in a ceremony attended by thousands of mourners.

Police were at a minimum and there was no friction between them and the crowd.

Mr. Kariuku was last seen alive leaving a Nairobi hotel on the evening of 1 March. His body was found near a village 15 miles (24 kms) away two days later, but was not identified until 12 March.

Before the burial several speakers supporting Mr. Kariuki -- who was known as one of the Government's sternest critics in the one-party Parliament--pledge that they would uphold his principle of equality for all Kenyans.

Government representative Mr. Simon Nyache, Provincial Commissioner for Central Province, said that kenya's President Kenyatta hoped the people would co-operate with the Parliamentary Committee appointed on Friday (14 March) to investigate the murder.

Meanwhile, members of the Parliamentary Committee said on Sunday that it would meet for the first time on Wednesday (19 March) but subpoenas for witnesses and material evidence would be issued immediately.
