  • Description

After continuous heavy rain the Riven Garonne, south west France, burst its banks recently, Large areas were inundated between the town of Agen and Bordeaux. At some points the river spread out to a width of nearly a mile. Troops were called in to re-inforce the dikes and river banks with sandbags. Many main roads were cut and a landslide blocked one track of the Paris-Toulouse railway. Gales swept away Christmas decorations in Bordeaux streets and held up shipping in the Gironde estuary. Other rivers affected were the Lot and Tarn.
