Background: Support from Western Europe for the Arab cause is being urged by Syria. The call came on Sunday (6 November) from Syria's Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam, at a banquet in Damascus in honour of the President of the Common Market's Council of Ministers, Monsieur Henri Simonet.
SYNOPSIS: M. Simonet, who is the Belgian Foreign Minister, arrived at Damascus Airport on Saturday for a two-day visit to discuss moves towards closer relations between the two countries. But the wider issues of relationships between West European countries and the Arab world was the theme of speeches at the official dinner.
Mr. Khaddam said Syria was still waiting for Belgium and other European countries to show clearly that it supported Arab rights and recognised the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Syria welcomed an EEC statement earlier this year in which the Common Market recognised the need for a Palestinian homeland. M. Simonet replied that the Common Market was working towards consolidating relations between the European community and Arab countries.
