Background: Demonstrators in support of both Israel and the Arab countries marched through London on Sunday (11 November), instigated by the presence of the Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir.

Pro-Arab demonstrators stood outside the Churchill Hotel in London. Inside the hotel, Mrs. Meir was attending a special meeting of the Socialist International, called to discuss Middle East developments. She's expected to hold private talks with individual heads of state attending the meeting, including West Germany's Chancellor Willy Brandt and the Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kneisky. The pro-Arab demonstrators handed over a petition which said that Israel should realise that its security could be safeguarded "only by agreeing to the terms of peace based on justice, and by recognoscing the legitimate rights of the Palestine people."
Meanwhile, a crowd estimated to be 10- to 12,000-strong marched through London's Hyde Park, bound for the Israeli Embassy. They carried placards and pictures of Mrs. Meir and chanted pro-Israeli slogans. Among them was Lord Shinwell, president of the Solidarity with Israel Committee.
